for individuals & couples, face to face & online

Creative Psychotherapy for individuals and couples in Somerset & online
Welcome, I’m Katherine
As a qualified Art Psychotherapist, Couples Therapist and Online Therapist I am dedicated to supporting individuals and couples to build a curious and collaborative therapeutic relationship. Whether you are seeking to deepen your self-understanding or enhance your relationship dynamics, I will be alongside you as we seek to understand your struggles and work towards the changes you wish to see in your life and relationships.
Often people come to therapy because there are specific difficulties in their lives that they want to address. Or you might feel a sense of dissatisfaction but be unclear why or what is going on and need help in exploring this. Therapy can also be used to deepen your understanding of yourself or your relationship without their being an immediate crises that brings you here.
I am committed to providing a non-judgemental, compassionate, confidential space where trust and honesty can flourish. Through reflection on present experiences and exploration of past events, we can work together to uncover insights and foster personal growth. I believe in meeting you where you are as we navigate the challenges you face and pave the way for new possibilities to emerge in your lives and relationships.

Beyond my private practice, I also share my expertise/knowledge through part-time lecturing in creative therapeutic practice and counselling. These all enrich my understanding and approach to therapy.
If you are curious about working with me, I am here to offer gentle support as you discover the resilience within you.

Couples Therapy
As a Couples Therapist I am here to assist you in creating the space that allows each partner to be heard and your relationship to grow. I bring my understanding of relationship dynamics, my observations of what happens during the relating between you and my curiosity about both of your perspectives on your relationship. I can help you make time to face the difficulties in your relationship that seem hard to address alone and discover the strengths you have as a couple.

Art therapy
As an Art Therapist I am here to support you to explore your experiences using creativity and play with art materials through drawing, painting, making and reflecting. Creativity can help to access thoughts and meanings outside of conscious awareness and express thoughts and feelings it is difficult to find words for. I am there to support you in developing your use of materials and to discover ways to get started that help you to explore your thoughts and feelings and expand your creative potential.

Pesso Boyden Body-Based Psychotherapy
Pesso Boyden Psychotherapy is a body-based psychotherapy that works with your thoughts, feelings and somatic experiences to explore ways to heal. It works to create new possibilities through embodied experiences. I integrate Pesso Boyden elements into regular psychotherapy session when useful and offer both individual and group structures opportunities.

Common reasons that people come to therapy can be depression, anxiety, loss and bereavement, problems at work, problems in relationships, family difficulties, previous trauma, mental health difficulties and diagnoses, feelings of dissatisfaction, disconnection or loneliness.
I work with where you are at.
I have worked with a wide range of struggles and difficulties, but my areas of particular experience and interest include dealing with traumatic experiences and difficult childhood events, mental health difficulties and grief.
How does it work?
Sessions Fees:
Individual Sessions - £60
Couples Sessions - £80
Payment is made in advance of sessions and I invoice you for payment.
I review my fees annually in March.
I carry a couple of lower cost places for those on benefits/low wage. Please contact me to enquire about availability.
If you feel it will be helpful we can arrange a free 15 minute telephone call to answer any immediate questions - contact me to arrange a time.
All work starts with an initial session which comes with no obligation to continue. It gives you the chance to sit down with me and get a feel for whether I am the therapist you want to work with – to feel if there is a good fit between us.
This session also allows us to get to know each other, address any concerns and think about what your hopes and expectations are for therapy. We will also discuss how we might work together and the initial commitment you are wanting to make.
Sessions last one hour for both individual and couples. Sessions take place usually at the same time on weekly basis either in-person in Frome or online.
Throughout the process we will reflect on how the therapy is going, any changes you are noticing and what strengths you have and can develop.
My practice takes place both in-person in Frome, Somerset and online. I work with people both throughout the UK and abroad.
I work from my comfortable practice room, a garden studio. This does have a couple of steps in places and a cobbled pathway.
I am based not far from the Catherine Hill area of Frome, Somerset. There is free local on-street parking. I will provide you with written directions once we confirm a meeting.
Frome is accessible from the surrounding areas including Westbury, Warminster, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Radstock, Bruton, and Bath.
I work with individuals and couples online, both across the UK and Internationally.
With a Diploma in Online Therapy I find it an effective therapeutic option that offers support to those that have limitations around location, disability or time. Many couples find it a particularly useful way of working that can help with fitting in joint sessions around busy schedules.
Hybrid work can be adapted to individual needs and circumstances.
You can contact me by email, through the contact form on this website, or by phone and ask any immediate questions you might have. From here I usually suggest an initial session for us to meet, either online or face to face. During this we would discuss and think about what is bringing you to therapy and what you are hoping for. In this meeting I can learn about you, and you are able to get a feel for me and decide whether I am someone you could feel comfortable working with.
There’s no obligation to take things further, and you don’t have to decide at this stage. If we agree to work together then we would arrange further sessions. These are an hour in length and usually take place weekly at the same time. We work together for as long as you feel you need, and we can discuss what this might look like in the initial meeting.
This is a difficult question to answer because it depends upon each individual or couple, where they are at and what they are wanting to get out of the work. It is something we can discuss in the initial stages but as a guide, consider how long you have lived with the difficulties you are facing and how much they affect you? If something is a shorter-term problem, then this might more easily resolved than something that you have been affected by for a long time.
Many people find that it is helpful to engage for at least 3 months to achieve something useful. Others find it helpful to continue for longer periods.
For couples considering therapy it might feel difficult to know whether it is right for you both at this time. In such cases it can be helpful to undertake a pre-therapy consultation period. This is a set number of sessions (usually 4 or 5) to explore where you both are at and to look at each partners commitment to working on the relationship. In these sessions we can look at some techniques to manage certain difficulties and consider what you each might need going forward, be that therapy or something different. Contact me to discuss if this is a better option for you.
Sometimes people come to art therapy thinking that they need to have some ability or skill in art, drawing or making. This is not the case. Partly this is because in art therapy our interest isn’t primarily in skill or making aesthetic judgements. Mark making and scribbles can hold as much meaning as a carefully crafted piece of work. All that is needed is an interest and a willingness to try.
Online or distance therapy happens using either a video or voice only connection over the internet. You remain somewhere comfortable in your personal space for the duration of the session. There are a variety of reasons that online therapy can be helpful and beneficial, and it might be something worth considering if you are finding face to face therapy difficult due to access requirements, location or local therapist availability. Some people like to use a blend of face to face and online work creating a mix that might work better for their individual needs or circumstances.
Payment is made via bank transfer in advance on a monthly basis unless alternative arrangements are agreed between us. I will provide you with a full copy of my practice policies and I invoice for sessions in advance. When able I carry a small number of lower cost places for those on benefits/low wage - please contact me to enquire about availability. I review my fees annually in March/April.
Abrupt endings are discouraged and I encourage early discussion when thoughts or feelings around ending arise so that time can be given to reflecting on this. Endings can often be a powerful part of the process of therapy and much learning can be gained from them regardless of the reason.
Any cancellations made within a 14 day notice period incur the full fee. I will always try to rearrange a session given notice, but this will depend on my availability and is more likely further ahead of time.
