Katherine Engel | Creative Psychotherapy

working with individuals, couples and groups

face to face & online

As a therapist I am dedicated to supporting individuals and couples to build a curious and collaborative therapeutic relationship that can support you to understand yourself or your relationship on a deeper level.

You may be interested in therapy because there are specific difficulties in your current life or past experiences that you want to explore. Or you may be with a sense of dissatisfaction that is hard to understand and need support in making sense of this. Whatever is troubling you, therapy can give you a space to start to uncover what is going on for you and make more sense of your experiences.

I am committed to providing a compassionate and confidential space where it can become possible to share difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences and feel less alone with these. Through reflection on present experiences and exploration of past events, we will work together to navigate the challenges you face and pave the way for new possibilities to emerge in your life and relationships.

Art therapy

As an Art Therapist I am here to support you to explore your experiences using creativity and play with art materials through drawing, painting, making and reflecting. Creativity can help to access thoughts and meanings outside of conscious awareness and express thoughts and feelings it is difficult to find words for. I am there to support you in developing your use of materials and to discover ways to get started that help you to explore your thoughts and feelings and expand your creative potential.

What therapy can help with?

Common reasons that people come to therapy can be depression, anxiety, loss and bereavement, problems at work, problems in relationships, family difficulties, previous trauma, mental health difficulties and diagnoses, feelings of dissatisfaction, disconnection or loneliness.

My approach

I work with where you are at.

I have worked with a wide range of struggles and difficulties, but my areas of particular experience and interest include dealing with traumatic experiences and difficult childhood events, mental health difficulties and grief.

My interest in therapy is focused on the ways our past experiences and present difficulties interlink and how our patterns of relating show up in our daily lives, our creative work, our bodies and our relationships. When we can bring attention to these and stay with these for a while we can discover new meaning and understanding.

How does it work?

Psychotherapy can be a way to deepen your understanding of yourself and your relationships without their being an immediate crisis that brings you. Setting aside some time and space to think about things with another person who is trained to help you learn from your experiences can be helpful.

If you feel it will be helpful we can arrange a free 15 minute telephone call to answer any immediate questions - contact me to arrange a this.

Getting started

All work starts with an initial session which comes with no obligation to continue. It gives you the chance to sit down with me and get a feel for whether I am the therapist you want to work with – to feel if there is a good fit between us.

We will discuss your hopes and expectations from therapy and consider ways forward.

Sessions are for an hour and take place at the same time on a weekly basis.

Location

My face to face practice takes place in Frome, Somerset. Frome is accessible from local towns of Westbury, Warminster, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Radstock & Bruton.

I work from my comfortable practice room, a garden studio. This does have a couple of steps in places and a cobbled pathway.

I am 5 minutes walk from the Catherine Hill area of Frome. I will provide full written directions once we confirm a meeting.

Online Therapy

I work with individuals and couples online, both across the UK and Internationally.

With a Diploma in Online Therapy I find it an effective therapeutic option that offers support to those that have limitations around location, disability or time. Many couples find it a particularly useful way of working that can help with fitting in joint sessions around busy schedules.

Hybrid work can be adapted to individual needs and circumstances.

My Experience

I have been working therapeutically with people using the creative arts since 2006 and have over 13 years of qualified experience working with individuals and groups as a psychotherapist.

With a background in Fine Art and Graphics exploring my creativity had led me to experience the ways that creative expression could open internal doors to unacknowledged parts of ourselves. This eventually took me to an initial training in Art Psychotherapy in 2009. My prior employment experiences include working in NHS mental health settings working with complex mental health needs and working with charities supporting those with trauma and abuse histories.

I completed post-graduate training on working as a Couples Therapist in 2018 as I recognised the power of relationships for further learning about ourselves and realised how many clients needed more direct support with their relationships. I also qualified as an Online Therapist to allow me to more comfortably work with clients online, something that I find particularly of value to many of the couples I work with. More recently I completed my training as a Pesso-Boyden Therapist after experiencing the power of this work for my own personal growth.

Alongside my private practice I am a qualified teacher and I am part of the training team at Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BCPC). This work brings me into contact with students grappling with the both concepts of counselling and psychotherapy and their own personal development and helps to challenge my thinking and keeps alive my own questioning mind about practice.
